DC Comics unleashes a new universe of superhero titles

DC Comics has a new strategy to be No. 1 in comic books: all-new No. 1s.

Starting this summer, the publisher will re-number its entire DC Universe of titles, revamping famous characters such as Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and others from its 76-year history for a more modern and diverse 21st century.

The first book to be released under this new era: Justice League No. 1, out Aug. 31, a series by writer Geoff Johns and artist Jim Lee that reunites the famous lineup of Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Wonder Woman and Aquaman.

Johns promises a focus on the interpersonal relationships within DC's trademark superteam. "What's the human aspect behind all these costumes?" he says. "That's what I wanted to explore."

In September, more than 50 more first issues will debut, introducing readers to stories that are grounded in each character's specific legend but also reflect today's real-world themes and events. Lee spearheaded the redesign of more than 50 costumes to make characters more identifiable and accessible to comic fans new and old.

"We looked at what was going on in the marketplace and felt we really want to inject new life in our characters and line," says Dan DiDio, who co-publishes DC with Lee. "This was a chance to start, not at the beginning, but at a point where our characters are younger and the stories are being told for today's audience."

In an even more important move in the competitive comics industry, DC is making issues of all the renumbered titles available digitally via apps and a DC website the same day they arrive in comic shops. It marks the first time a major comics publisher has done so with its popular superhero titles.

The company has come in second to Marvel every year since 2002 in market share, according to Diamond Comic Distributors.

While the two companies are making millions off movie adaptations of their comic books, print sales for both have dropped in recent years, as new technology gives readers many more options.

"We're allowing people who have never bought a comic book in their lives to download them on portable media devices and take a look," Lee says. "Having the ability to give people access to these comics with one button click means we're going to get a lot of new readers."

He says what makes this plan so ambitious is that it's not just about changes in characters or costumes but setting the stage for how comic books will be consumed in the future.

"We're trying to set the table for the DC Universe's future success and health."

Call of Duty Subscription Service, Confirmed

A subscription-based Call of Duty service has been confirmed. With the realease of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 this fall, a subscription-based service called "Call of Duty Elite" will be launched. According to Activision Blizzard Elite players will have access to extra content, like map-packs, etc... They also, said that a subscription to Elite won't be required for multiplayer.

The price of the Elite service has not been announced yet, but according to Activision, it will be less than fees for "comparable online-entertainment services" (i.e. Netflix).

Activision head Bobby Kotick stated in a recent interview that he isn't worried about "pushback" from gamers, because Elite won't be required to play online. But did say that the Elite service is an "enormous investment," and will provide content to the game that would not have been possible with a free service.

Mortal Kombat: Legacy - Ep. 6 - Raiden

Series Description

Mortal Kombat: Legacy brings to life the complex and rich history of the gaming world of MORTAL KOMBAT. Shao Kahn and Shang Tsung are obsessed with reigning over various realms (parallel universes) and the winners of Mortal Kombat competitions are granted supreme control over these worlds. The Earthrealm (Earth) is an unconscious participant in this competition and only a few select humans understand the consequences of losing Mortal Kombat and what it will mean to Earth. In a universe with powerful evil sorcerers, cyborgs, Gods and movie stars, this Mortal Kombat digital media series drives a cohesive understanding of what this Universe is all about.

Episode 6 Synopsis: ”Raiden”

The following episode represents director Kevin Tancharoen’s “different take on the Mortal Kombat universe,” combining the perfect amount of gritty realism mixed with a hint of mysticism… When Lord Raiden, God of Thunder and protector of Earth, finds himself in an earthly mental institution in the year 2011, his ‘delusions’ are treated with some rather primitive forms of therapy (involving an ECT machine and an ice pick). Nonetheless, Blue, his beautiful, fragile yet insane fellow inmate, is Raiden’s only hope of escaping the mental hospital and making his way to the Mortal Kombat tournament to defend Earthrealm from Shao Khan

NBC Explains Why They Passed On WONDER WOMAN

NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt explains why NBC has decided to drop David E. Kelly's Wonderwoman from NBC's lineup before it even airs. Here is what he had to say in an interview with Entertainment Weekly:
“I hate to disappoint anybody. I know there are legions of fans of the original show,” Greenblatt told EW. “I don’t know if it’s cursed or what. I just have this one experience. They made a really fine pilot and Adrianne Palicki did a fantastic job. You look at what you have, what you need, and it just didn’t seem to fit in with what we were doing."

“We did what was best for the schedule,” Greenblatt continued. “It does give one pause. You’re almost damned if you and damned if you don’t. It’s tricky.”
Notice that Greenblatt makes no mention of the costume or script issues, he just says it did not “fit”. Now there have been speculations that another network will pick up the pilot, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Megan Ellison Wins 'Terminator' Rights Auction

Indie film producer Megan Ellison has just bought the rights to the Terminator franchise. According to Deadline, Megan Ellison won an auction for the rights to make at least two more installments of The Terminator franchise, with Fast Five's Justin Lin attached to direct and Arnold Schwarzenegger attached to star. The deal came down to Ellison's Annapurna Films and Lionsgate, which seemed to have had the project sewn up until she came forward with a dramatic bid. The auction at the time was for a guarantee for at least half of the $29.5 million paid by hedge fund Pacificor to pull the franchise out of bankruptcy. It is unclear what the winning amount was, but they are estimating it was somewhere in the range of $20 million.

PSN Restoration Has Begun

Sony has announced the PlayStation Network has begun restoration. The PSN will be restored in a series of phases with phase one restoring access to the PSN, online gaming for the PS3 and PSP, access to Netflix, Hulu, MLB.com and PlayStation Home. The remaining features, such as the ability to make purchases from the PSN Store will return soon. Below is a video of Sony’s Executive Deputy President, Kazuo Hirai, making the official announcement.

Keep reading for details about changes Sony has made as well the changes gamers must make.

Sony Online Entertainment have been working on making the following security updates to ensure the safety of their users’ data. These updates took time and Sony did not want to relaunch the PSN, or their other online services, until they had been properly implemented and tested.
  • Made enhancements to overall data security

  • Updating and adding advanced security technologies

  • Additional software monitoring

  • Performing new penetration and vulnerability testing

  • Increased levels of encryption
Gamers will have to make security changes as well. A PS3 system software update will prompt players to change their password. This is mandatory. You can only change your password from the PS3 console you made the account from. If you no longer have the PS3 you will be able to change it through emails, although it is not clear what the validation process entails. This software update is active now.

According the PSBlog it will take a while for the update to become active across the county, and the world. Sony has posted a map showing which states have had access restored. They estimate it will take several hours for the entire country to be updated. Sony encourages users to download the software update in the mean time.

Sony Discusses Plans For PlayStation Network

Despite the fact that it is both a holiday and a Sunday in Japan, three Sony executives held a press conference today to discuss the PlayStation Network outage. Kazuo Hirai, President of Sony Computer Entertainment, Shinji Hasejima, Senior Vice President, Sony Corporation, and Shiro Kambe, Senior Vice President, Sony Corporation were all onstage in Tokyo today to detail the PlayStation Network outage in detail, and to talk about the plans for restoration of the service, and what they are going to do in terms of compensation.

First, Kaz Hirai spoke from a prepared statement, saying “We would like to extend our apologies who we invconvenienced and worried because we potentially compromised their data. We offer our sincerest apologies.” In fact, the entire mood of the event was very somber and reserved, will all three men looking extremely serious. Not the normal atmosphere for a Sony press conference around the PS3.

Next, they detailed most of the history that we already know: On April 20, Sony Japan was alerted to unusual activity in their some of their servers, which are housed in an AT&T service center in San Diego, California. That activity had taken place from April 17 through April 19th, and when they were informed on the 20th, they turned off the servers and immediately launched a full investigation and engaged a US security firm to mirror the servers and begin their own investigation. They quickly determined that this was a highly sophisticated attack by a skilled individual.

On April 24, they also engaged a security firm who analyzed a large amount of data, and on April 26 they posted all of this information on the PlayStation blog. They reiterated that the three or four digit security codes were not compromised, and that no confirmed cases of damage caused by the lost data have been reported. Staying on top of this remains their top priority. They have since asked the FBI to conduct an investigation as well, and they will share any information from that as soon as possible.

Shinji-san addressed the matter in which the hacker gained access to the servers, most of which was described in this image that I’m calling “The Language Barrier.” Apparently the individual created a tool inside the server firewalls, which gave them access to the servers and the information. They pointed out that while there are up to 78 million accounts on the PlayStation Network and Qriocity, but there are only 10 million users with credit card accounts that were possibly affected by this. Besides credit cards, the networks also take PSN Cards and electronic payments or e-money as payment, so some accounts were created that way.

They also discussed some of their new security measures. These include:
  • Accelerating the move, which was already planned, of the data server in San Diego to a new location with more advanced security.

  • Enhancing detection capabilities for unauthorized intrusions, adding automated software monitoring, enhancing levels of data protection and encryption and the ability to detect unusual patterns in the server. They will also be installing additional firewalls.

  • They are creating a position of Chief Information Security Officer who will report to Shinji Hasejima.

  • There will be a system software update to the PS3 that will force users to change passwords. “We regret that we are causing this inconvenience,” they said. Additionally, the password can only be changed on the same PS3 on which the account was created, or through validated email. No doubt this will cause issues for some users.
Users should also be vigilant and check their own credit card statements and purchase histories and change their passwords on other accounts and services. They pointed out that Sony will not contact you to ask for account information, and that they will be covering the cost for theft protection services. They are also looking into covering the costs for users who decide to cancel their credit cards and get new ones.

  • Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity subscribers (in countries where the service is available) will receive 30 days free service.
Sony mentioned the hacker collective Anonymous several times by name, and mentioned that Sony at large had also been under several other attacks for the past month and a half across multiple systems. They aren’t sure if these attacks are related, or if the main PSN outage was organized or enacted by Anonymous at all, but they have received multiple threats and warnings from that group.
